And so it begins…
Posted by Jack, January 23rd, 2010So here it is, my very first blog on whatscookingtv.com. Actually, it’s my very first blog period. I’m a wee bit “low tech” (as the kids say) so bear with me. Your encouragement/advice is always welcome. I’m so excited to be a part of this wonderful culinary adventure… We’ve been busy planning our first shows for a few months now and it’s lovely to see it all come together. So let the blogging begin!
Maybe I should start by telling you a little bit about myself. (I feel like I’m on a blind date)
I’m a TV host, an actress, a writer, a Mom… a “Jack of all trades” if you will, no pun intended. (well, maybe a little.) Before what’s cooking, I was the host of “How to Boil Water” on Food Network US but if you live North of the 49th Parallel, you may know me from the daily lifestyle show “Three Takes”. I am also a Second City Alumni. Second City is an improv comedy troupe that originated in Chicago and has a theatre in Toronto, check them out if you haven’t already-funny stuff.
But as much as I love comedy, I LOVE food even more. I’m definitely a foodie… My favourite dish is Osso Bucco. I can never pass it up when I see it on a menu, that and of course Crème Brûlée…the greatest dessert ever made… I think the Nobel Peace Prize should be awarded to the fella who invented it, just one gal’s opinion. I’ve never been a big fan of liver. As a kid, my Dad used to fry it up in a pan with far too many onions and would make the house stink for a week… Bless his heart, he tried. But poor ventilation, high heat and liver do not a culinary hat trick make! I do make a “liver exception” when it comes in the form of pate, I could eat a city block of that stuff!
I’m so glad to be a part of this show. Every week, I’ll try to pass along kitchen tips I’ve learned along the way from hosting a food show, being a Mom and growing up in a family with nine kids (yup, you read that right). If I can help make your life easier in the kitchen, teach you how to make some simple delicious recipes and we can have some fun doing it, then I’ve done my job. ( And I know you’ll have lots of fun hanging out with Richard and Warren each week too!)
My philosophy in life and in the kitchen is: K*I*S*S*… nope, I’m not talking about the leather clad powder faced rock band, but instead …“KEEP IT SIMPLE SON”. It doesn’t have to be fancy schmancy to be good!
I’d love to hear from you, whether it’s a question or a tip you want to share. I figure, we’re all in this together. And of course, don’t forget to tune in every Saturday at 7pm on Citytv! PS…If you miss the show, you can catch the rerun on Sunday at 6:30pm or log onto this site.
Phew , I made it through my first blog…thanks for sticking with me to the end… so until next time… remember “KISS”
Jack

Hi there, Within the Granville Island Main Public Market there is a vendor who sells bulk nuts, seeds, spices, grains, etc. It is called "The Grainry". Most people wouldn't know it by name but it has been there for years and is the only store of it's type within the market. If a person were to ask any worker in the public market "where the bulk nut and grain place is" they would find it. Quinoa is also available in the bulk foods section of most major grocery stores. Enjoy!

Hello Jack of all trades, I would just like to say that i am enjoying the show and especially the personalities! For your first blog i think you wrote a pretty fun article and, i gotta agree, the creme brule is, no doubt, at the top of the list. You take good care of my good friend Warren for me. I guess the perfect closing line for this blog would be, keep it simple yet interesting!

Great Show ! I have a favor to ask as I too am a foodie. When Patricia Chuey was talking about QUINOA I couldn't help not to notice the interesting store she was in, I'm guessing a bulk food store or ?? Is it possible to get the name of this store (in Vancouver?) I'd love to check it out. Thank you ID
