Baguettes, bicycles and brie!

With Mothers day around the corner I thought I’d share a few memories from my recent trip to Paris with my own Mum. My sisters and I took my 82-year-old Mother over the pond and attempted to pack a lifetime of dreams in only four days. Exhausting and exhilarating all at once. It did not disappoint. Having never been to Paris before I was overwhelmed by the energy of the city and of course the unbelievable food. I think I ate my way through the entire city! My theory was to go into “carb rehab” when I returned home. Our days were filled with baguettes and brie, foie gras, crisp frites, croissants au chocolat, crepes and the best roasted chicken ever made. When we shopped in a local marché for some room snacks, we found fresh fruits, vegetables, edible flowers, hens with their feet and feathers still intact and more types of cheeses than there are days in the year. I jammed my suitcase with bags of lavender and herbes de Provence and a fancy bottle of Margaux in hopes of bringing a bit of the city’s flavour back home with me.

Paris is all about presentation from clothing store windows to pâtisseries and boulangeries. Walking along the streets was almost sensory overload. Each window dressing outdid the last. They were more like works of art than displays. “Hugo & Victor’s” candy store showed frosted pink cupcakes piled high, next to mounds of dark chocolates and colourful meringue candies in the shape of tiny hamburgers. Next door, a sea of stylish trench coats in every colour of the rainbow, and then a flower shop’s window lined with rose petals and tiny chic monochromatic bouquets.

My Mum had a list of three must-sees that we made happen between her “snaps” (short naps) in the hotel room; seeing the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, the impressionists at the Musée D’orsay and going to mass at Notre-Dame Cathedral. She was a real trooper and we were able to explore the Latin quarter, the Eiffel tower, and some great red awning-covered sidewalk cafés. When in Paris...

Mother’s day came a little early for my sisters, myself and Mum this year... It was truly a trip of a lifetime. I’ve always said one day I’ll see Paris with someone I love. That dream finally came true.
So in honour of Mother’s day, I think call my Mum and I’ll crack open that fancy bottle of red from my suitcase and open the jar of foie gras I tucked in my socks in my carry-on bag... Sorry to cut this short but I gotta go hop on my bicycle and grab a baguette from the grocery store around the corner ...you can take the gal outta Paris but you can’t take Paris outta the gal.

Happy Mother’s Day! Tell us about your favourite Mother’s Day moments,. We always love hearing from you!

I think it is wonderful that you said you always wanted to see Paris with someone you loved and then went with your Mom and sisters. Made me shiver. Love the show. Love the blogs too.
