Ok some people know where they were when the astronauts landed on the moon. Others track their lives with conventional benchmarks and yardsticks… I track my life with an ICE CREAM TIMELINE.

Ice cream has played a huge part in my life. From the time my Dad would pile all us kids into the station wagon in our PJ’s to get cones at “Variety Drive,” to my modern day frozen dessert obsession.

They don’t call them Ice cream socials for nothing. Ice cream brings people together and brings a sense of comfort in good and bad times. I’ve been through many evolutions of flavours over the years and ice cream has mirrored many milestones in my life. So like the lunar landing is to some, ice cream is to me. Follow along my ice cream timeline…

EARLY CHILDHOOD: Hard Chocolate on cake cones from “Variety Drive-In” with my Dad and my siblings. I first learned that leaving your house in your PJ’s was fun!

THE TEEN YEARS: Double scoop Praline’s and Cream & Rocky Road on a sugar cone during High School.
UNIVERSITY: My University roommate Roxane and I scraped our last nickels together. Studying for exams is much easier with ice cream…(Rox surprised me on my wedding night with several pints of ice cream on ice in my hotel room sink
PREGNANCY: Mint Chocolate Chip in a cup while on bed rest in the hospital when I was pregnant with my son Spence. I was there for several weeks and there was an ice cream shop in the basement of the hospital. It got me through the dark days!

MOTHERHOOD: choc dipped cones with my son Spence after his baseball games as a little boy… the team would meet and enjoy the victory loudly together!

COMING HOME: All types @ my neighbourhood ice cream shop. When I first moved back to Toronto, my sister got me hooked on it . We’d solve the world’s problems while sampling each other’s flavours!

WORK: double chocolate cheesecake ice cream. Last summer my writing partner Paul and I did an ice cream campaign and every meeting started off with a tray of ice cream samples!

TODAY: Frozen turtle pie –ok this one may not have “ice cream” in it but it is the best frozen pie I’ve ever had! You can find it in our summer edition of the what’s cooking magazine…page 46… If you don’t get the what’s cooking magazine, log onto whatscookingtv.com and find the recipe there too! Come on, what are you waiting for… your dessert is going to melt in this heat!

I bet you can track your life with a common culinary thread…try it, and send it to me!

P.S. Our food consultant, Annabelle, gave me a great “faux” ice cream tip… Freeze small slices of banana in a re-sealable bag. Once it is frozen, toss it in a food processor and puree it! Wow, you won’t believe how it comes out… Creamy, mousse-like, delicious… Add a tiny sprinkle of nutmeg and/or chopped toasted walnuts! Enjoy.
