Summer and dieting
Posted by Patricia, May 3rd, 2010With the nice weather kicking into high gear, the desire to lose a few pounds to fit into that bathing suit might be top of mind. The word “diet” is a common part of many people's vocabulary at this time of year. More than 50% of women are trying to lose weight, while 25% of men say they are watching what they eat. Many are willing to do anything it takes to reduce their waistline. This may lead to extreme diets or use of unproven weight loss products in an effort to get fast results.
Wanting to lose weight is one thing. Succeeding in the long run is another thing altogether. Unfortunately, it doesn't happen at the snap of the fingers. You have to allow yourself time, be patient, stay motivated and above all opt for balanced, healthy eating and consistent exercise habits.
While some methods turn out to be ineffective, others are quite simply harmful. And the unrealistic expectations that we place on ourselves can rapidly wear away our self-esteem. Studies done in the U.S. have shown that repeated weight loss diets can result in overall weight gain in the long term.
So that's why it's important to adopt a more global approach. To achieve results in the long term proceed in a steady, gradual manner. What's important is to adopt a healthy diet based on the four food groups with plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. Learn to recognize your hunger and fullness cues while not trying to lose more than one or two pounds each week. Yes, it is more gradual, but it’s a healthy way to achieve your objectives and avoid losing and regaining weight all the time (the yo-yo effect).
Being strong, fit and healthy is worth more than simply fitting into that bikini. Ask yourself if you're doing the best you can to maintain a healthy lifestyle and feel your best this summer.
Cheers!

P.S. I just bought a new bathing suit the other day. Yep, it’s never fun not looking exactly like the pictures in the magazines, but instead of worrying about that, I look forward with excitement to my favourite time of year! It’s so healthy…plenty of summer-ripe fruits and veggies, vitamin D from the sun, vacations, time to relax…and so much more! The season is FAR too short to waste time worrying. Let us know what your favourite summer activity is!
